First Car Memories

Having a think back about the first car you owned in the past can bring back some great memories, can’t they?

My first car was a 1992 VW Polo coupe bought from a local dealer for £500. The car was a sickly shade of green and not in the best condition. If I’m honest I have no idea why I bought it, but gradually it did grow on me!

It was the height of summer and the weather was perfect for a drive to the Lake District. I filled up the tank 3 times on the way there, which is not so unusual I guess, unless you live in Newcastle… The previous owner had fitted some thick alloy wheels and I suppose it ended up rubbing against the fuel tank, that and the car could never reach full lock before some scraping sounds were heard.

At the time all my friends were driving around in nearly new cars and though admittedly I was jealous at the time, all my friends would agree with me that we had the most laughs in my old ’92 Polo, it was a little ugly but it had character, It was a touch rusty and could have really benefited with a bottle of MIG welding gas.

If I could go back now, and to be fair, if I had some funds to at least keep it off the road for some years, I’d still own my first car now. The last I heard, it had been taken off the road and I assume used in the scrap scheme the government ran some years back now.

I was always armed with my trusty audio cassette adaptor when I had my weekend jaunts in the Polo, it was the cheapest option for me – it was either that or listen to my only other tape… A Guns n Roses compilation.
